In a course for my Masters program, we worked with clients on real projects. One of the clients was the American Association for Physician Leadership (AAPL). They asked our group to create a scenario-based learning experience for physicians seeking to advance their skills in leadership. They wanted it to be an interactive game-based learning experience.
The learner is presented with a scenario that represents one of AAPL’s nine core leadership domains. The learner is required to respond to that scenario by choosing the best possible option. This provides an experience similar to real life, as the learners will be expected to use their best judgement on how to address an issue in a timely manner. Their choices result in the learner receiving feedback in the form of a point system, which then visually displays either a resolution of the issue or a loss (e.g. employee being upset at the lack of thoughtful care). These reflect real life consequences and are beneficial for the learner to either improve their knowledge or assess whether their understanding of how to handle these scenarios is adequate.
Our audience were physicians in healthcare settings who have already completed their schooling but are still in an early stage of their career. This training benefits learners who have not yet had the opportunities to learn through experience or alternative self-guided learning. In order to provide a similar experience for our learner, without it being a real-life situation, the game must replicate believable, reality-based scenarios that are adaptable to scenarios the learner might encounter in their own line of work.
In order to meet these needs, the game design needed to meet the following factors:
• Provide the learner a character that is relatable
• Provide an achievable goal
• Construct learning
• Provide a sense of connection and emotion
• Provide the learner with confidence in order to successfully complete the learning experience

This mock course was prepared for the Hillsborough County School District during one of my Masters courses. The course supports parents who were making decisions about virtual schooling in the early days of COVID-19.
The goal was to create an online informative course-like environment that would be used by parents/guardians of children who chose to attend school online as opposed to in-person instruction. This instructional course focused on ensuring that these individuals understood the type of eLearning tools their children would be utilizing, how they function, basic use, technical issue resolution, and the additional resources that were available to them.
